Dotcom celebrates 25th Birthday
Today the hugely popular Internet domain name “Dotcom” marks its 25th birthday. The event is expected to ring celebrations all around the virtual cyberspace. It has been quite an eventful journey in the last 25 years when the very first dotcom name was registered.
It all started in March 1985, when Symbolics computers of Cambridge, Massachusetts made their mark into the Internet history books by registering for a website domain name ending in dotcom. In that very year five more companies listed their web address with a name ending with the same extension name. However, it took almost a decade to catch up with the dotcom bandwagon for others.
Well into the dotcom boom, the trend took a giant leap. By the year 1997, internet registered it’s one millionth dotcom address.
To mark this glorious event, top IT houses and dotcom industry chiefs are expected to go in for lavish celebrations. According to Verisign CEO Mark McLaughlin, this momentous day is “really significant”. Dotcom is a representative of the whole internet fraternity and as any major event of this stature is sure to “make internet much more popular”, he added.
Expressing his astonishment at the huge popularity of the Dotcom phenomenon the world over, he remarked at this twenty fifth year birthday celebration to be a “groundbreaking event”. Who would have guessed the popularity of internet 25 years ago? Dotcom has created a new definition for the internet users and is sure to touch further milestones in the future.
